Suspension recommended for officer who killed teen

By Rocky Mountain News

Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman recommended a 20-day suspension today for Officer James Turney, who killed a developmentally disabled teen last summer, News 4 reported.

Turney shot and killed 15-year-old Paul Childs July 5, 2003, after the boy refused to drop a knife in the hallway of his house at 5550 E. Thrill Place in east Denver. Childs' sister had called 911.

The recommendation will now be reviewed by Denver's manager of public safety, Al La Cabe.

The killing of Childs, an East High School student, caused outrage in the neighborhood, and community activists are calling for an independent investigation. It was Turney's second fatal shooting.

Turney declined to comment to News 4 after a disciplinary hearing today.
